Holiday home near St Jean d\'Angely in the Charente Maritime . Self catering holiday home near St Jean d\'Angely in the Charente Maritime .Self catering holiday rentals in the Charente Maritime west France. Romantic windmill for two: Peace! Croquet! Oysters!
Unwind in tranquil Charentais countryside in a beautifully converted old stone windmill in meadows behind our traditional farmhouse with its lovely gardens around. Le Moulin de la Quine is 3km from Saint Savinien and set in gently undulating countryside overlooking a hamlet and tree lined valley leading to the lovely Charente River. The stone windmill is centuries old and built in the traditional style. Beautifully converted several years ago, the windmill has had a new kitchen and shower room installed, providing modern comforts without losing the mill’s greatest quality, its romance. Set in meadows 30 metres behind the house, it is not overlooked and is reached by a separate approach. It has plenty of private space, which merges into the landscaped gardens around the house – these include a croquet court available to guests, though the turf does not quite reach Hurlingham standards! In spite of its apparent lack of windows, the inside of the mill is light and bright, thanks to two sets of double French windows on the ground floor (with the wooden doors opened up). This living area leads via a winding staircase to the landing, galley kitchen (thoughtfully equipped) and shower room on the next floor. A second staircase leads to the light, airy, pretty bedroom, with double bed. The windows have lovely views. Outside are a garden table and chairs, two lounging chairs and a portable barbecue. We have paid as much attention to aesthetics as to the facilities in the mill since the romantic ambience is its essential ingredient, complemented by the peace and quiet of its setting in the Charentais countryside. The garden has been described as a mini-nature reserve. Buzzards and kites soar overhead, nightingales sing in April and May, hoopoes feed on the lawn. There are wonderful wild flowers too…. Saint Savinien, a tiny, picturesque town, 35km upriver from the Charente estuary at Rochefort, is set in the heart of the Saintonge region of Charente Maritime, an ideal centre from which to explore the many attractions of the area. Overlooked by the church, perched on its rocky promontory, is the town’s shady park and leisure area, with swimming pool, mini golf and miniature port, set on the island formed by the oxbow of the Charente river and the canal. Only five minutes by car from the mill, the town has excellent food shops and a good supermarket as well as a market on Saturday. Visits to the beautiful Roman town of Saintes (24km) and mediaeval La Rochelle (50km) are a must. There are other towns of great historic and architectural quality to visit, such as Rochefort (an old naval town), St Jean d’Angely and Cognac, famous for its distilleries. The offshore islands are ideal for day trips. Pretty beaches at Fouras (near Rochefort) are 30 minutes away, super beaches near Royan, on the Ile d’Oleron and elsewhere are 50 minutes or less. There are road bridges to the two largest islands, a ferry to another and a causeway to the smallest. Along the coast are the oyster beds for which Charente Maritime is famous – oysters and other shellfish are easily and cheaply available and feature on most of the menus in the many excellent restaurants in the area.
